Our Favorite Hummingbird Feeders and Things

Birding is a favorite past-time of many hikers, and humming birds are my very favorite trail-friends. The Uinta Highline never disappoints – at least one hummingbird always shows up to my Highline adventures. This is sacred for me. When my oldest went on an Anasazi experience, the trail name my mama was given was “Hummingbird Warrior.” Whenever I see a hummingbird as I hike, it feels like a little trail-hug through space and time from my mama.

Closer to home, I spend more time caring for and getting up close and personal with the hummingbirds in my neighborhood. There are five products I really love that make hummingbirding more joyful, adventurous, and help me take good care of my zippy little friends.

• Tiny little hummingbird houses
• Window hummingbird feeders
• Ring feeders that come with tiny little cleaning wands
• A wearable hummingbird feeder helmet
• Mason jar hummingbird feeder with no plastic parts

Tiny Hummingbird Houses

I’ve only once seen a hummingbird land on one of my tiny hummingbird houses, and I don’t think any have nested in mine, but one of my friends did have some hummingbirds living out of hers. Plus– they are just so darling. They’re pretty lightweight, so don’t expect them to last more than a few seasons, but I do love hanging them and I’ll always be hoping for tiny little house-dwellers in mine!

Hummingbird Window Feeders

This two-pack of hummingbird window feeders lasted over three seasons, and several times a day I had hummingbird visitors at my window. The suction cups really did work – just like the reviews claimed they would. Because I soak my feeders in vinegar at least once every two weeks, and I live in a very hot, sunny area, after the third year the plastic flowers on top were falling apart. While I could have replaced only the feeders, it was just as affordable to replace the whole product. SO worth the 15-ish dollars!

Ring Feeders and Cleaning Wands

These tiny little ring feeders sit on your finger just like a ring, or you can simply hold them. When a hummingbird feeds straight from your hand like this- it’s pure magic! The huge bonus here is the tiny cleaning wands. These clean every little spot of these ring feeders, but they also work great for cleaning ALL my feeders.

Mason Jar and Metal Hummingbird Feeder

Not only does this hummingbird feeder look so stinkin’ farmhouse cute, it is so much more durable and functional than a lot of the plastic feeders I’ve owned. The vinegar cleaning process I use to avoid both detergents and bleach-which are SO bad for hummingbirds, but to still sanitize and flush out any little moldy bits-SO crucial for hummingbirds–that process is really hard on plastic. The added bonus to this feeder is if you break the jar, you can still use the bottom. Just add a regular mason jar!

Hummingbird Helmet Feeder

OK, so I just got this helmet feeder for Mother’s Day, and I haven’t had a chance to test it out or try it yet. For the last several years, I’ve just worn sunglasses, glasses, or held my breath hoping a hummingbird didn’t accidentally poke out one of my eyes! I’m excited to give it a try, and I’ll keep you posted as to if I really love it- but at the very least, it’s a really cool concept! This set comes as a two pack, and also includes the little wand cleaners.

While these items don’t really have much to do with our usual hiking birding posts, they’re a great set of hummingbird gifts, and I couldn’t resist sharing. Hope you get a chance to sit with some hummingbirds, and enjoy them – just watching, or interacting with some fun things!
